Teresa talked non-stop the entire drive to the store and LaTonya didn’t hear a word of it. Her mind was back at the house with Terrell, thinking about what could have been. Being with him was something she had dreamed about since she started having those types of feelings about boys her age. And now that chance was gone—drowned away by the incessant chatter of her sister-in-law, whom she had no desire to be in the same room with. LaTonya pulled over for a series of fire trucks coming towards them.

“Please just stop talking!” LaTonya said pounding the steering wheel. Teresa’s mouth hung open in shock. LaTonya felt immediate regret and placed her head gently on the steering wheel. She sighed. “I’m sorry.” After a moment, she took a deep breath and continued on to the store.

The rest of the trip there, in the store, and the beginning of the drive back were spent in silence. Neither of them even looked at each other. They were a few blocks from the house when LaTonya pulled over to the side of the road.

“Listen, Teresa,” LaTonya said as she put the car in park and turned to her. “Let’s clear this up before we get back.” Teresa turned to her and LaTonya saw that she had tears in her eyes. LaTonya sighed. “I’m so sorry that I snapped on you like that. You didn’t deserve it. It’s just been a crazy night, that’s all.”

“I just want you all to accept me into this family,” Teresa said. “That’s all I ask. I’ve been going out of my way to fit in with you all ever since Junior and I have been together. Why do you hate me so much?”

“Hate you? We don’t hate you. I just think that you’re trying too hard. Maybe that’s what it is. You should just try being yourself. You don’t need to impress us. We’re a tight family; we’d love you no matter what.”

Teresa pulled a handkerchief out of her purse and dabbed her eye. LaTonya watched a fire truck pull around the corner towards them. “Thanks for your honesty. It means a lot.” LaTonya felt her looking at her. “Does it have something to do with Terrell?”

LaTonya turned to her again. She thought about lying about it, but realized that the moment was gone. “Yeah, it does.” She took a deep breath before she spoke again. “We had a plan to sleep together before he left for the airport. This trip to the store was just a way for me to get out of the house and meet him at his place.”

Teresa gasped. “Oh no, LaTonya. I’m so sorry. I wouldn’t have volunteered if I had known. You have to believe me.” She placed a hand on her shoulder. “There’s still time right? We’ve only been gone, what, thirty minutes?”

LaTonya looked at her out of the corner of her eye. “Are you serious?”

“Yes, I’m serious. If I get you back now you can still be with him.” LaTonya saw the pleading of her eyes.
